Youth Matters

The Parish Council has taken various steps to encourage and support youth interests within the village. Other than providing and maintaining open spaces and play areas it has established a Youth Interests sub-committee. It encouraged the formation of a Youth Forum in 2005 and supported the Youth Project from 2004 as it pursued its objectives (see below).

Youth Forum

In May 2005 the parish council accepted the proposal to encourage the formation of a Youth Forum. The Forum aimed to put young people in touch with key decision makers at parish, district and county level so they might make Rothley a better place to live. It was also expected to be represented within the Charnwood Youth Forum.

Unfortunately this body no longer continues to meet. It held two meetings in September 2005 and March 2006 before being wound up as it failed to be sustained.

Youth Project

A set of individuals worked between 2004 and 2007 to establish an independent youth group. With the detached youth workers and others they undertook various fund raising activities and sought grants in order to provide accommodation for youth activities.

Accomodation, in the form of portacabin buildings, were installed on the Fowke Street Playingfield beyond the new carpark and adjacent to the junior IMPS football club units.

The Youth Club "opened for business" in late March 2007.

Councillor Olwen Jones represents the Parish Council on the Youth Project committee.
